The Three Things That Last forever
1.
Sleeping through the certainty of sunrise,
I am late for the barn.
Boots on gravel.
Crows talk in trees.
Horses kick at stall doors,
hungry and impatient.
They lack faith.
.2.
Rising from an empty bed
to feed the horses.
Even today,
when trees stand in dust,
brittle and ready to burn.
When the whole dry world is just
hoping for some god damn rain.
3.
Rain falls on Columbines
pushing gently through pine-needle loam.
Reaching for soft love
dripping from the Blue Spruce,
where a cinnamon bear
licks the face of her cub
and watches me walk by.
